Give that man the Nobel peace prize!
Mujica is a former urban guerrilla once gunned down while resisting arrest in a Montevideo bar who, after injuring two policeman, was shot six times. Subsequently he was imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship of the 1970s and '80s.
Gaining his freedom when the army were kicked out of power, and on entering politics, Mujica went on to be described as the world's most humble president, as well as an 'anti-politician' who speaks the language of the people due to a contentedly austere lifestyle and donating 90% of his salary to charities that benefit poor people and small entrepreneurs.
In June 2012, his government made a controversial move to legalize state-controlled sales of marijuana in Uruguay in order to fight drug-related crimes and health issues, and stated that they would ask global leaders to do the same.
In retirement he now grows chrysanthemums having declined to live in the opulent presidential palace or use of its staff when in office. His lifestyle is reflected by his simple farm and the ageing Volkswagen Beetle in the driveway. Also living at the farm is his three-legged dog, Manuela.
Quote: "The most beautiful thing about the day is that it dawns. There is always a dawn after the night has passed. Don't forget it, kids."
NB. Yesterday's Canadian election saw Justin Trudeau elected to power with a mandate to legalise ganja.
The future is bright, the future is green!
