There was a tremendous cacophony going on outside this morning, and it wasn't Mr Vavra on his way home from his nocturnal wanderings to late night hostelries. It was caused by four of the raft of ducks that live by the pond. From my balcony 25 metres above the deed I watched two drakes watch another drake mount a hen, and when Casanova Quacker finished the job he sort of toppled sidewards off the back of the female now quacking gently with satisfaction, and lay on his own back looking up towards the balcony, webbed feet flapping excitedly. I laughed and so did Nutjob, my neighbour, on the balcony above.
"Fucking," he said, using the only word of English he'll ever know.
A few days later while out on the bike on a clement afternoon I stopped at a favoured pond and enjoying the tranquility and ozone, mist on the water, my attention was caught by splashing from the water's edge and on closer inspection from the bank there was a group of about 8 or 9 frogs engaged in some kind of frog orgy, utilizing the shining silver corpse of an upturned and deceased fish as a platform for their fornication.
Then a couple of days after that I was negotiating the bike down a sloppy and slippery and puddled and muddy farm track when my attention was caught by grunting and groaning to the left, and across the log fence I saw a bull mount a cow and as blossom floated from treetops it finally dawned on me that Spring is in the air.
